چکیده

We examine the relative stability and adhesion of the polar Al(1 1 1)/WC(0 0 0 1) interface using density functional theory. Relaxed atomic geometries and the ideal work of adhesion were calculated for six different interfacial structures, taking into account both Wand C-terminations of the carbide. The interfacial electronic structure was analyzed to determine the nature of metal/carbide bonding. Based on the surface and interfacial free energies, we find that both the clean WC(0 0 0 1) surface and the optimal interface geometry are W-terminated. Although both terminations yield substantial adhesion energies in the range 4–6 J/m, bonding at the optimal C-terminated structure is nearly 2 J/m stronger, consistent with an argument based on surface reactivity. In addition, we examine the effects of Li and Mg alloying elements at the interface, and find that they result in a strain-induced reduction of metal–ceramic adhesion. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. First-principles study of metal–carbide/nitride adhesion: Al/VC vs. Al/VN

We have performed density functional calculations to investigate the adhesion and electronic structure at interfaces between Al and the refractory transition metal nitrides/carbides VN and VC in order to understand the significance of the ceramic’s metalloid component upon interfacial properties. We find that for both systems the preferred bonding site places the metal interfacial atoms above t...

Stoichiometry and Adhesion of Al/WC

We examine the relative stability and adhesion of nonstoichiometric (polar) Al/WC interfaces and WC(0001) surfaces using Density Functional Theory as implemented in a planewave, pseudopotential formalism. Prediction of strong adhesion at the MoSi2/Fe interface

We report a spin-polarized periodic density functional theory investigation of the atomic structure, bonding, and ideal work of adhesion of the MoSi2/Fe interface, in order to explore the potential of MoSi2 as a protective coating for steel. We find that MoSi2 strongly adheres to Fe, with an ideal work of adhesion of 3.85 J/m for two low-index, low-strain interfaces. This value will be a lower ...

Wear Behavior in Micro and Nano-Structured WC-9Co-0.7VC Cemented Carbide Produced by Rapid Hot Press Sintering

The effect of CaO on the formation of β- and γ-zirconia nanoparticles from α-zirconia was investigated and their stability evaluated via mechanical activation. α-ZrO2+8.5wt%CaO powder was milled for 2-150 hours with ball-to-powder weight ratios (BPWR) of 40:1 and 60:1. Structural evaluations were conducted using X-Ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Thermal analysis wa...
